How Parents & Athletes Can Maximize Their Opportunities

Every year, talented rodeo athletes miss out on thousands of dollars in scholarships—simply because they don’t know where to look. Whether you’re a student planning your next step or a parent trying to make sense of FAFSA forms, understanding how financial aid really works can make all the difference.

Paying for college is one of the biggest hurdles families face—and rodeo scholarships rarely cover everything. The real win is stacking rodeo, academic, FAFSA/grants, and outside scholarships. That’s exactly what college financial aid teams encourage.

“Springtime is typically the deadline for scholarships… each entity has their own deadline.” — Anna Miller, Scholarship Coordinator, Casper College

🐴 Rodeo Scholarships: A Piece of the College Funding Puzzle

Rodeo scholarships vary by school and coach, and they’re usually limited. Treat them as part of a broader package rather than the whole plan. This is also where we remind you: don’t pick your college solely by who gives you the most money!

📘 Academic Scholarships: The Real Difference-Maker

High GPA and test scores unlock significant merit aid and can make you far more attractive to coaches building a roster (and a budget). Keep grades strong and ask every school what academic awards you qualify for.

💰 FAFSA & Grants: Don’t Leave Free Money on the Table

FAFSA opens federal and state programs like Pell and Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG), which can stack with rodeo and academic aid. The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a need-based grant for students with exceptional financial need. Unlike loans, it doesn’t have to be repaid. Each college receives a limited amount of SEOG funds from the federal government — which is why applying early and meeting priority FAFSA deadlines matters. Once a school’s SEOG funds are gone, they’re gone.

✅ Pro Tips

List every school you’re considering on the FAFSA. Stay in contact with financial aid offices—ask when they’ll start importing and processing FAFSA data.

🌟 Outside & Private Scholarships: Where Hustle Pays Off

There’s more money out there than most rodeo families realize—state community foundations, ag organizations, local businesses, employer tuition programs, even creative video-based awards.

“There’s so much money out there, institutionally and even externally.” — Anna Miller

Practical game plan:

  • Search by state (e.g., “Wyoming scholarships”), check state community foundations, FFA/4-H, ag orgs, and local civic groups.

  • Never pay for a scholarship search tool.

  • Expect to write essays—and talk about real costs (feed, boarding, ropes, gear, travel).

  • Start as a junior: build your list and deadlines now.

  • Check out the Scholarship Corner right in the Portal.

🏫 What If You’re Waiting on Aid to Choose a School?

Apply, get accepted, and keep schools on your FAFSA list while aid offices work through delays. Many colleges won’t force an early commitment.

🗂️ Final Tip: Start Early, Stay Organized, Communicate

Build your package step by step: rodeo + academics + FAFSA/grants + outside awards. Keep your FAFSA/FSA ID info handy, track deadlines, and talk to financial aid.
